Sri Lanka is a tropical island nation set in the heart of the Indian Ocean, just south of India. Located along historic maritime trade routes connecting Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia, the island has for centuries welcomed travellers, traders, and cultures from around the world. The vibrant coastal capital Colombo lies on the western shore and serves as the gateway to the island’s rich landscapes, heritage, and experiences. Sri Lanka is home to over 21 million people and a civilization with more than 3,000 years of recorded history. While the island is widely known as a Buddhist country, it is also a harmonious home to many cultures, nationalities, and religions living together in mutual respect. This diversity, combined with ancient traditions and warm hospitality, makes Sri Lanka one of the most culturally rich destinations in the world.
Sri Lanka enjoys a tropical climate influenced by two monsoon seasons that affect different parts of the island at different times of the year. The Yala monsoon (April/May to September) mainly impacts the west and southwest coasts, while the Maha monsoon (November to March) brings rain to the east coast. For exploring the south and central highlands, the best travel period is December to March. For east coast beaches and surfing destinations like Arugam Bay and Trincomalee, the ideal season is April to September. Thanks to this unique climate pattern, Sri Lanka is a year-round travel destination with great experiences in different regions throughout the year.
All travellers visiting Sri Lanka require a valid tourist visa prior to arrival. The easiest way to obtain this is through the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system provided by the government. Tourist visas are typically issued for 30 days, and we recommend applying 1–2 weeks before your travel date to ensure a smooth arrival. The application can be completed online by submitting your details and paying the visa fee using a credit card. Once approved, the confirmation is usually received within a few days and must be presented when boarding your inbound flight. For official visa applications, please visit the Government ETA portal: https://www.eta.gov.lk
The official currency of Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Common banknote denominations include ₨10, ₨20, ₨50, ₨100, ₨500, ₨1000, ₨2000, and ₨5000. Exchange rates change regularly, but currently approximate rates are: 1 USD ≈ 309 LKR 1 GBP ≈ 415 LKR 1 EUR ≈ 360 LKR Sri Lanka has traditionally been a cash-friendly destination, especially for small shops, tuk-tuks, and local markets. However, in recent years many hotels, restaurants, travel agents, and shops in major tourist areas such as Colombo and Galle widely accept international credit and debit cards, making payments easy and convenient for travellers. ATMs and authorized currency exchange counters are also available throughout the island for quick access to local currency.
Sri Lanka is a culturally rich country influenced mainly by Buddhist traditions, along with Hindu, Muslim, and Christian communities. Visitors are warmly welcomed, and locals are known for their friendliness and hospitality. When visiting temples, stupas, or religious sites, modest dress is required. It’s best to cover your shoulders and knees and remove shoes before entering sacred areas. Outside of religious places there is no strict dress code, especially in beach destinations and tourist areas. Travellers can comfortably wear swimwear or bikinis at beaches and resorts, which is completely normal in coastal towns. Sri Lanka is generally safe, welcoming, and very used to international visitors, and locals are respectful of European, Asian, and all other cultures. Simply travel with respect and you will feel very comfortable exploring the island
Planning a trip to Sri Lanka can sometimes be challenging, especially when it comes to transportation, route planning, and finding the best local experiences. As a destination that is best explored through a round-island journey, moving from one region to another requires careful planning and reliable logistics. Public transportation is available, but it can be time-consuming, crowded, and difficult for visitors to navigate, especially when trying to connect multiple destinations across the island. Reserving seats, managing luggage, and coordinating transfers can often become stressful during a holiday. This is where a professional local travel agency makes a real difference. With an experienced destination team, strong local connections, and a deep knowledge of Sri Lanka, we can ensure your journey is smooth, comfortable, and perfectly planned. From private transportation and trusted drivers to hand-picked hotels, authentic experiences, and carefully designed routes, every detail is arranged so you can simply relax and enjoy the island. Our team takes pride in creating personalized travel experiences, helping you discover the very best of Sri Lanka — from cultural heritage and wildlife safaris to tropical beaches and hidden local gems.
